Chapter Nine

A special team of preservationists from the university came for the removal of the warrior queen the next day, transporting her in a special truck that I watched being loaded from a safe distance, near the white tent where Elaine and her team processed the smaller finds from the excavation.

"It will be fascinating to find out what they can learn from her," remarked Percy, tucking his hands into his jeans pockets. "I, for one, think it will make every bit the fascinating chapter in the memoirs of Doctor Pierce-Bishop as her Camelot."

The wind played through his unruly hair and the impractical blue scarf triple wound for warmth on a morning that promised cool rain, and on which Percy's waterproof jacket was somewhere at home. I knew he was probably dying to join in the moving process, but he kept his distance, too.

"I keep thinking you'll grow tired of editing the current book and come back to the field," I said. "But you always talk as if you care more about her dig's story than she does."

His laugh burst out, short and hearty. "I do," he said. "Elaine will never have a taste for the academic side of being academic. She would give a thousand lectures before she would willingly type her thoughts for the world. I've said before, she's a child of the oral tradition — not the ancient scribes."

My lips twitched. "So in you come, filling the gaps," I said.

"As would any friend with time to putter," he said, staunchly. "I think my digging days would be shorter ones by necessity. A wrenched knee in Ecuador humbled me considerably this past year. I hobbled about on sticks, making the camp coffee, but I felt I was a hindrance more than a help."

"I'm sure they didn't think of you that way," I said. "But Amanda would be relieved to hear you say it. At your age, a little slowing down probably would be a good thing."

"Ah, the probably," said Percy, chuckling. "Kind of you to add it." He breathed in, slow and deep. "The book is important, and I elected to devote myself to it for that reason, but it was also a ruse to dig further into the other matter, after Elaine confided in me. So far it's come to nothing, but your recent interest has given me a little boost of enthusiasm again."

"Did it?"

He smiled. "I rang the man I initially tapped to look into the matter of Cecily's abandonment. No clear record of evidence regarding whoever abandoned her, so it's hopeless on that score. But I told him I want to expand the search of villages. The old baby bag found with Cecily had receipts in the bottom, old ones, missing the pertinent barcode information one would have today, but for shop brands. A ticket from a south England village was in the outer pocket — another slim avenue for investigation."
